Sustainable Building
with American Hardwoods

Why Substituting Hardwood for Steel or Plastic Significantly Reduces CO₂ Emissions and Energy Consumption

Every cubic meter of hardwood that is substituted for cubic meter of steel or plastic removes about one ton of CO2 from the atmosphere.  No other building material does this.

American hardwoods use far less energy in manufacturing than any other material (www.ahec.org)

Pennsylvania’s Growing
Forest Legacy

Sustained Growth and Abundance in US Forests

For over 100 years, Pennsylvania has been preserving and conserving a forestry industry that was nearly decimated by the early 1900s.

Through these efforts, Pennsylvania features almost twice as much forested land as it did 100 years ago, making up nearly 60% of the Commonwealth’s total landmass.

These efforts are echoed nationwide with harvest levels more robust than ever, and a strong and dedicated commitment to responsibly managing our Nation’s nearly 1.2 million square miles of forested land.

Number of pallets
Wood weight in lbs.
1.48 Metric Tons of CO2 emissions reduced per month per ton of wood saved from landfills

This estimation is based on the EPA Waste Reduction Model (WARM) for “dimensional lumber”. It is derived by taking the difference between the net CO2 emissions produced by landfilling and the net CO2 emissions produced by recycling dimensional lumber. For more information, consult: epa.gov/warm
